SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police hostage negotiators are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The team never knows what kind of calls they’re going to get. The goal is to slow things down and let time take its toll. Sgt. Edward Klauer, the head of SAPD”s hostage negotiations team, says there is a very creative group of people that are on the team. “They come from all different walks of life, and they’re all different ages bring all kinds of different perspectives,” Klauer said. Klauer told News 4 San Antonio his team works out of a truck. “That's kinda our mobile office that we conduct all these negotiations out of,” he said. Klauer says everyone on the team has a job, and one team member is designated to talk to the person the other end while everyone is gathering as much information as they can about them. “It’s actually a pretty big team effort,” he said, “that's behind this one guy we call the mouth piece.”
